out of focus

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

i can’t seem to concentrate today. i think i’ll spend the day cleaning the house- the charm city craft mafia peeps are coming over tonight for a meeting.

this reminds me to remind you about the cccm’s holiday heap show to take place on dec. 1 at st. john’s church (same location as the spring’s pile of craft). deadline is oct 1.

good morning everyone!

some new things for you to take a look at in the etsy shop today. i’m off to brew some coffee and have a day at the bench. yay! - i spent ALL of yesterday at the computer dealing with photos, etc. i really should do more work in front of the monitor, but i’m itching to work on the peacock motif seen a few posts earlier.

it’s that time again: the threadless $10 t-shirt sale!

i just picked up these two (though one was not on sale):

alyssa ettinger

Monday, August 27th, 2007

i received a note from alyssa today.  it’s always so nice to receive snail mail.  this is a reminder to say hello via paper and pen now and again. . .

i have long been a fan of alyssa’s work, especially the knitware series.

had to share . . .

in the garden this morning

Monday, August 27th, 2007

on my way out for a large iced red eye this morning (completely wired now), i stopped to say hello to the garden in our front yard. steve is the loving caretaker. beautiful job, steve!

iconography

Monday, August 27th, 2007

according to wikipedia, “Iconography is the branch of art history which studies the identification, description and the interpretation of the content of images. The word iconography literally means “image writing”, or painting, and comes from the Greek εικον (image) and γραφειν (to write).”

at first sight, i felt immediately magnetized  towards these pendants by uk based paraphernalia.

it reminded me to ask myself what meaning our adornments have to us. . .

remember how i said i was sooo tired last night. remember how i said that i was off to take a nap? i lied. - i was never much of a napper. my body doesn’t know how. instead, i popped in a new dvd rental, “craft in america”- a pbs production.

i watched two of three episodes: episode 1: memory, episode 2: landscape.

(some artists included in the episode 1 are tom joyce, jan yager, sam maloof, garry knox bennett)

i especially like episode one where different artists spoke about why they craft. each artist featured spoke with such joy for the history of the craft and reverence towards the material. (craft fields in this episode included basketweaving, woodworking, and blacksmithing.) i can’t wait to watch the last episode. this is a MUST SEE.

psst. available via netflix and probably your local library-if not, ask for it!

pictured below: sam maloof, the first craftsman to receive the MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 1985. my new hero for his soft-spoken ways, lifetime devotion to his craft, and the sweetness with which he recounts the memories of his wife.

today i treated myself to a new studio tool- the tumble vibe. that’s right- it’s actually CALLED the tumble vibe. hee hee.

and man is it LOUD!!

but so worth it- dirty jewelry goes in, shiny and work-hardened jewelry comes out!

i’ve been lacking in the picture department lately. after the camera fiasco on tuesday, i haven’t been able to even pick it up! here is one from my archives- penn station (baltimore) at night:
